History

Timeline of Orchard Baptist Church, Colchester.

1899 Official foundation of Blackheath. Services were held in a barn belonging to a member, Mabel Sheard.

1905 The land the barn was on changed ownership and the new owner, Ellis Ramsay Reid, was willing to sell. The church brought it for £75 on Tuesday 27th June. The chapel was built for £280. This was a time of considerable financial hardship. The Sunday school children raised money by buying a brick. A full list is here. These bricks can be seen today. Some are numbered, others have the child's initials on them. The total raised was £22.  8% of the total cost. Foundation stones were laid by Alderman Wilson Marriage J.P., Judge Willis K.C. and Rev. E. Spurrier on Tuesday 5th December. Judge William Willis K.C. was president of the Baptist Union in 1905
