Baptisms and Dedications

Baptisms

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. In keeping with this ‘Great Commission’ here at Orchard we follow the practice of ‘believer’s baptism’.

Baptism is by total immersion, although we hold that it is the depth of the faith – not the depth of the water – that is important. In going through the waters of baptism an individual is making a public declaration of a personal faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. It is a picture of being buried and raised to new life, and is an external demonstration of an internal experience.

Infant Dedications

As Christians we believe that everyone is special to Jesus, including children. In fact Jesus got angry with His disciples when they refused to allow children to come to him.

Like many other churches, here at Orchard we dedicate rather than baptise children who are too young to believe in Jesus for themselves. This is a ceremony through which we thank God for the safe arrival and life of the child. The parents who feel able to also make a promise to God to teach their child about the Christian faith by what they say and the way that they live.

If you would like to have your child dedicated, please contact the church office.
